Imatech has developed a new tool for the scanning the internal dimensions of paste and back fill lines in underground mines. Once these paste and backfill lines are installed there are limited systems available for the monitoring of their “wear” performance. As you can imagine, pumping between one million and ten million tons of “paste” (a mixture of aggregate and cement) down a line up to two kilometers long introduces a lot of abrasion into what is typically a steel pipe, lined or unlined. It is this wear that we are looking to monitor and avoid the potential failure of either a pipe worn through and paste material being lost or in the worst case a tensile failure of the pipe and 60 tons of pipe dropping into a mine stope.
We have developed prototype monitoring equipment which is in operation and we have developing a list of physical and operational improvements that require both mechanical and electronic design input, but changes that do not move too far from the basic prototype. Refer attached file
The project summary therefore is to:
1. Modify the existing design to a modular concept,
2. waterproof the operating unit
3. incorporate other design and form changes to improve the robustness of the unit, and
4. Develop a GUI style interface that enhances the operator experience and reduces the technical skill required for operation.
