Build a Website

Over the semester, you will be working in a group of two, even though this 1st assignment is an individual one. This assignment 1 is worth 20% of the total marks for this Unit. It covers the following: Your own web site - Create your site with raw HTML5 (or XHTML), CSS, Javascript and SQL. You are not allowed to use any package such as Dreamweaver, Visual Studio or any other web site building software. The site must be created according to the required standards or specifications (see below for more explanation). Understanding of the web servers, browsers and standards - Administering IIS and Apache; role of standards; how the code in your Web site works. You will have full access to a virtual Microsoft Windows 2003 server and will be expected to maintain it. You will be given an administrator account and initial password. Follow the instructions given by Bruce Kneale to use your VM. Make sure that you DO NOT CHANGE other ADMINISTRATOR accounts created by Bruce as this will mean I cannot access your server for marking. This may attract a penalty of 20% in marks. Quality of the work, including such as the proficient and effective use of the technologies and techniques, code validation according HTML 5 and CSS 3, ease of navigation, consistent and aesthetically pleasing look and feel across the site, will also be a major factor of consideration for the top grades. MARKED IN LAB SESSION Due for Marking in Week 5 (20 marks) On the designated virtual machine, enable the IIS web server and set up a virtual directory called WTDOC. Disable IIS, then enable it again at port 8080, and then download and install XAMPP at the default port 80. Hence you should set up 2 web servers: IIS at port 8080 and Apache at the default port 80. Create a web site of your own for the Apache server (at port 80), consisting of at least a home page and 3 or so others, to demonstrate page linking. This site should be about the latest trend of mobile phones, the varieties, and their popular usages. One of these pages should be about you, the creator of this site, your former study and/or work experience and perhaps your career goal. Include some graphics, different text sizes and colours, at least one table and various layouts using HTML5 or XHTML. Please DO NOT use any Content Management System or any web authoring tools (other than a plain text editor like notepad++) at this stage although you are free to make use of any image editors. Replicate the styling for the whole site using purely CSS style sheets for ALL the formatting so that they will all have a similar look and feel. There should be a page with a text area form element, and a text box to enter a valid email. Use Javascript to write a validation script for the email entry so that, when the form is being submitted, it will first validate the email address with the Javascript, and the form submission will be aborted if the validation fails. Be prepared to explain fully your code (i.e. if you download a script from web to do the validation, you need to acknowledge where it came from and demonstrate that you fully understand the script). Using PHP for the Apache server, have a page to service the form in the above item and store the results in a MySQL database. Assume that you have already read all the books contained in the tables in [login to view URL] which may be used to create tables in your database. Provide a search means, a name input field, with which if someone enters an author name then you would be able to list all the books of this author that you have read. Duplicate your website on Apache server to the IIS server at port 8080, modifying only the external CSS style sheets to display the pages as differently as possible (and still look nice).
