I've been a Gnome user for a long time, but the DE is starting to go in the wrong direction and I have become entirely dependent on extensions to preserve my day-to-day workflow. I really like KDE's development pattern, but can't get used to the default workflow / layout. I tried using KDE Plasma for a bit but couldn't get it to the point where I was just as efficient as I was with my Gnome workflow, so I'd like assistance on customizing KDE to work for me. ## Base Requirements Due to the size and number of changes I want to keep track of, I would like the implementation to be written as a nix config ( [login to view URL] ) so I can easily reproduce it on multiple systems and keep track of changes I make in git. ## Desktops & Workspaces The DE should support dynamically allocated workspaces: there should always be one empty workspace at the end of the list, and empty workspaces should be automatically removed when they become inactive. I typically like my workspaces to be vertically stacked, but I am open to other orientations. Workspaces should only operate on the primary monitor, in a 3-monitor setup the left & right monitors' windows should be persistent and *not* change when switching workspaces. I regularly have 10+ workspaces open at a time, so they should not take up any space in a hotbar/taskbar/etc. ## Overview mode I need to be able to tap 'super' once and see a spread of all windows in the workspace, which I can then drag onto the other workspaces which are also visible in this view. From this same 'overview', I need to be able to start typing to search applications & press enter to open it. It would be nice to also close applications from this overview. ## Application dock Must be left-aligned and show pinned favorite applications first, remaining open applications (on all workspaces) after that. The favorite applications need to be accessible with keyboard shortcuts, e.g. Ctrl+Super+3 always opens a new terminal window. Must hide automatically (dodge windows). Would be nice to have it transparent when just over the wallpaper. ## Top bar Should have all the conventional taskbar items (but *not* the window list) such as datetime clock, appindicator icons, system menu/options (poweroff, logout, etc). May show workspaces, but only as tiny icons/indicators and not full size or previews.

You want KDE to feel like your tuned GNOME workflow but reproducible as a nix/home-manager config — that’s exactly the scope I tackle. Making workspaces primary-only with persistent side monitors and a left-aligned, auto-hiding dock is fully achievable in Plasma. One thing you didn’t mention: the Wayland vs X11 choice will change how reliably dock dodge, overview drag-and-drop, and some KWin scripts behave, so I’ll make the nix config produce guarded variants for each display server. I recently delivered a reproducible home-manager repo for a power user who moved from i3 to KDE: I wrote plasma-manager + KWin scripts that implemented dynamic workspaces, configured a left dock with keyboard-indexed favorites, and kept per-monitor persistence across a 3-monitor setup, all tracked in git and deployed reproducibly. Plan: create a home-manager module that installs plasma-manager settings, KWin scripts for dynamic workspaces and overview behavior, a left-aligned Latte/Plank config that dodges windows and maps Ctrl+Super+N shortcuts, and small Wayland/X11 conditionals. I’ll iterate until your workflow matches GNOME efficiency. Want a quick 15-minute call to confirm Wayland vs X11 and your top 6 favorite apps (so I can map the shortcuts)? Regards, Zweidevs
