design a concentric double-pipe counterflow, 5-meter-long heat

exchanger with crossection shown in Figure 1. The heat exchanger is used to cool the engine oil for a large

industrial gas turbine engine. The flow rate of cooling water through the outer annulus is A kg/s and the flow

rate of engine oil through the inner annulus is B kg/s. The water and oil enter the outer annulus and inner

annulus at temperatures of C C and D C, respectively. Engine oil tube inner diameter is Di = 30 mm. The

wall thickness of outer and inner pipes is 2 mm.

First of all, you need to calculate the heat exchange in the configuration shown in the Figure 1, without fins,

and obtain the oil outlet temperature value. Then, you have to apply fins between outer annulus and inner

annulus to ensure that the outlet temperature of the oil does not exceed 50C. You have to gradually add

fins between outer and inner annulus to demonstrate the gradual reduction of oil outlet temperature. You

must compare different design scenarios and find an optimum design of the heat exchanger in terms of high

performance and low cost.
