I am scheduled to give a 10 minute speech at a conference with the theme of Technology Innovation. The industry segment is Oil and Gas industry. I believe other speakers will focus more on area of high technology, so I want to stand out from the crowd by taking a different track. I'll like to focus on the importance of innovation in improving Quality Control and Safety. The recent Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a case in point. While Boeing spent a fortune developing a high-tech new material for airplane fuselage, they are now stuck trying to resolve a low tech issue of battery; an issue that could potentially be traced to Quality of design and/or manufacturing. Now with 50 Dreamliners out of service since January 2013, Boeing and the airline industry is losing a fortune.
Also, one of the biggest challenges in our industry is Personal Safety and Process Safety. Our technology innovation initiatives should focus on improvements in this area. For example, we deal with very heavy structures in oil and gas operations, and we continue to record frequent accidents resulting from lifting and handling of equipment. How might technology innovation address such seemingly low tech but critical issues?
I expect to present a short 10 minute speech while showing impactful Powerpoint visuals that illuminate my speech.
