Transforming a partial second story into a full-height floor while removing structural walls requires a precise load-path analysis to ensure the new roof and floor loads are correctly transferred to the foundation. I specialize in residential structural modifications and have handled multiple roof-raise designs, ensuring they meet current building codes while maintaining the existing architectural character of the home. For your project, I will conduct a thorough structural assessment to determine if the wall you intend to remove is load-bearing and calculate the necessary beam sizes to support the new, higher roof line. You will receive clear, code-compliant structural plans that provide your contractor with the exact specifications needed for safe implementation. My approach focuses on constructability, ensuring we don't over-engineer the solutions while keeping your renovation on track. Are the existing ceiling joists or rafters currently intended for reuse in the new floor structure, or should I account for a complete structural framing replacement in the calculations?

Hello, I have experience working on residential structural projects involving wall removals, load-path review, beam sizing, roof framing changes, and second-floor modifications. I am interested in this project because removing a wall and raising the second-story roof both require careful structural review to keep the home safe, code-compliant, and ready for construction. I will review your existing plans, photos, measurements, attic/roof framing, foundation conditions, and the wall location, then determine whether the wall is load-bearing and what beam, posts, or supports may be required. I will also study the roof-raise concept, identify the framing changes needed to create a full second floor, and prepare structural notes, calculations, and drawings for review. I do not personally hold structural engineering licensure, but I can provide stamped or sealed results through an actively licensed structural engineer I work with. Thanks for reading my proposal. Hello! I understand you need structural engineering support for two connected residential modifications: determining whether the existing wall can be removed and designing the structural changes required to raise the second-story roof for usable full-height space. I have experience evaluating load-bearing walls, sizing replacement beams/posts, analyzing existing roof and floor framing, and developing structural details that coordinate with residential building-code requirements. I’ll review the existing plans and framing information, identify the load path and required temporary/permanent support for the wall removal, then assess the existing roof structure and develop the required framing, connections, and reinforcement for the raised roof. I’d be glad to review your existing drawings, photos, and site measurements and recommend the most practical structural approach.

Hello there! This sounds like a thoughtful residential project, and I’d be glad to help you move it forward safely. I have strong experience with residential structural work, including wall removals, load path checks, and code-aware redesigns for roof and floor framing. For the wall removal, I’d verify what it supports, trace the loads, and outline the safest way to proceed. For raising the second-story roof, I’d review the current framing, identify the structural changes needed, and define what reinforcement or redesign is required to create a full second floor. I work carefully with calculations, building code requirements, and clear documentation, so you get practical guidance you can trust. The key part here is making sure nothing important is missed: load transfer, lateral stability, and any permit or inspection needs. I can keep the process efficient and give you a clear next step plan quickly. Best regards.

Hi, The main risk is unknown load paths where you want to remove a wall and altered roof framing when you raise the roof of the second story; undetermined loads can lead to bearing failures and excessive deflection if not properly calculated and detailed. I have managed multiple residential remodels where the owner wanted to remove a partition wall and convert attic space into full second floor area. In those projects I coordinated a licensed structural engineer to produce load calculations, engineered beam sizes, connection details, and permit-ready drawings, and I handled the field verification and contractor coordination to ensure the design intent was executed. My background in technical detail, construction sequencing, and code review gives me the practical judgment needed to translate engineering deliverables into buildable scope while keeping costs down. My first step is to arrange a site visit with a licensed structural engineer to assess existing framing, gather measurements and load information, and produce span and beam calculations. I will review those calculations, confirm required temporary shoring for wall removal, and verify roof-raise framing details to open the full second floor area. - Would you like me to schedule an on-site assessment with a local licensed structural engineer and provide a fixed proposal after the visit? - Do you have existing plans, structural drawings, or recent photos of the wall and attic roof framing to share before the site visit? Looking forward to hearing from you, Christopher
