Thank for you very clear description of requirement. Unfortunately, I am afraid that your technical solution is not optimized. ESP8266 is much stronger than PIC with 32-bit 80MHz/160MHz processor, 9 digital + 1 analog GPIO pins, using a PIC here is absolutely redundant and not necessary unless you needs a lot of GPIO pins. The better option is - using NodeMCU or WeMos module, which has ESP8266 and microUSB/serial interface built-in. You will program these module from Arduino IDE and uses all existing libraries of Arduino which are quite mature and stable right now. Configuration for the ESP8266 system will be made via a Web interface as well, this include WiFi connection and password (it works like Chromecast), any settings, etc. Any measurement or data will be sent to a web backend. Control commands will be made from web interface. - About my experience, pls kindly look at my profile for this. - If you need a demo of a previous project, I can arrange a demo very soon. Basically, it is an ESP8266 system which enable user to measure temperature, control switches, sends alarm via email and sms, scheduling on/off, etc. all are made via web interface. Hello, my name is George Bouris. I have very good experience with ESP8266 WiFi module. In fact, I'm currently working on another project similar to yours, which I can demonstrate (screenshots, the development board even the online interface that is updated from the ESP8266 and can send commands to it). Since ESP8266 incorporates a microcontroller, which is more powerful than the PIC, I don't see the reason to use 2 MCUs. ESP8266 can perfectly control the peripherals you mention, while taking care of the WiFi communication. Regarding the initial setup of the device, the approach that I suggest is to run the ESP in 2 modes: - As an Access point, for the initial setup. You can access it with any WiFi capable device (mobile, laptop, anything) - As a WiFi client, for its normal operation. It will access the WiFi router and update the server. We can discuss the details and I'll demonstrate the device I'm working on, via chat or teamviewer.
