We require a low-cost flow meter that will work equally well in full, or partially full water pipes and open channels. The device must be able to measure velocity, flow, temperature, and depth. The device will require a Doppler sensor (or some other means) to determine water flow velocity, and a depth sensor to allow the device to calculate the actual water volume (flow rate). In addition, a means to input an irregular cross sectional profile will also be required to provide accurate flows measurements in a natural watercourse such as a river or stream.
Ideally, as additional options, the meter could also measure various water quality parameters such as Turbidity, Salinity, pH, and Dissolved Oxygen etc.
The device will send the data to a cloud-based application in real time via an RS-485 serial interface. The meter should include a data logger to store the readings when communications with the remote site is unavailable. When communications are again established, the meter will automatically transmit the stored date to the remote site.
Low power consumption is also a priority to allow for installations that rely on solar power.
The device would comprise two parts. The in-pipe sensor module and an above ground communications module to house the wireless transmission components and provide long range wireless communication.
The above ground part should also be able to interface to a weather station to obtain rainfall data for the site.
An external antenna socket will be required to provide the maximum transmission distance via a LoRa or GPRS radio module to connect with the remote site.
