I'm super excited, but also overwhelmed because I've just self-published my first book, Hey AdmissionsMom: Real Talk from Reddit. The book explores the college admissions journey from the perspective of the kids on the subreddit, r/ApplyingToCollege, and combines their voices with my advice. I'm a moderator of the subreddit and have been active there for the last two years. We have grown like crazy in the last two years. When I first started, we had 8000 subscribers and now we have over 95,000! My advice tends to focus on dealing with the stress and anxiety of the journey. Kids today are more stressed out than ever and I believe a large part of that stress comes from the college admissions process. I want colleges and parents to hear from the kids about their hopes, worries, and dreams.
I'm active on the subreddit and have a pretty active Instagram account and a less active twitter and facebook, but I really don't have any idea how to get this book out there.
WIth 394 pages of 37 bite-size chapters, the book covers pretty much any aspect of college admissions you can think of but focuses on essays, visits, and mindfulness. Here's why: I was a writing prof for almost fifteen years, I have a new app called College Vizzy coming out very soon, and I am a mindfulness teacher and I use mindfulness techniques with the reddit kids (and my private clients) to help them deal with the stress of the admissions process.
I'm looking for someone to help me with the publicity side of getting my book and my name out there and also the marketing/social media aspect of getting the book sold. I know that there is a good plan in all of this somewhere; I'm just a little too overwhelmed to deal with understanding all of it.
