I’m seeking a professional copy/line editor for Jack: Silent Sentry, a completed novel of approximately 75,000 words aimed primarily at upper-middle-grade/younger-YA readers (approximately 11–15+), with adult crossover appeal. The manuscript has already undergone substantial developmental and line-level revision, so I am not looking for a structural rewrite. I’m looking for an editor who can refine the prose at sentence and paragraph level while protecting a highly distinctive narrative voice. Jack narrates in first-person present tense, with a deliberately dry, analytical, faux-bureaucratic voice. The manuscript uses Australian English, intentional fragments, recurring terminology and motifs, and a carefully developed rhythm between clipped observations and longer narrative passages. I want an editor who will recognise when these features are intentional rather than automatically regularising them. I’m particularly looking for help with clarity, flow, repetition, consistency, continuity, punctuation, grammar and sentence-level polish. I welcome strong editorial suggestions where something genuinely is not working, but would prefer querying and refinement over unnecessary expansion or rewriting. I would like the edit completed in Microsoft Word using Track Changes and editorial comments, ideally with a style sheet. A short sample edit before committing to the full manuscript would also be valuable. I am particularly interested in editors with experience in middle-grade/YA fiction, strong narrative voice, humour and/or speculative fiction.

Jack's voice — dry, analytical, faux-bureaucratic, first-person present, sounds exactly the kind of distinctive narrator I'd want to protect, not smooth over. My approach: Voice calibration first — Read the opening chapters closely to internalise Jack's rhythm, recurring terminology, and the clipped/expansive pacing pattern before editing begins. Line-level polish — Clarity, flow, repetition, punctuation, grammar, and Australian English consistency, using Track Changes throughout. Comments over rewrites — Editorial queries and suggestions where something isn't working, rather than silent rewriting or expansion. Style sheet — Tracking terminology, motifs, spelling/punctuation conventions, and continuity details (names, timeline, recurring references) for consistency across the manuscript. Sample edit first — A short sample (e.g., 1,000–1,500 words) so you can confirm I've correctly read the voice before committing to the full 75,000-word edit. I have experience with middle-grade/YA fiction and strong narrative voice work, and I'm comfortable with speculative and humour-driven material where tone is doing a lot of the storytelling. Happy to start with the sample edit on a chapter of your choosing.

Copy editing a 75,000-word middle-grade novel requires distinguishing between intentional stylistic choices and actual errors—a distinction many editors miss. This manuscript's deliberately dry, analytical voice with intentional fragments demands an editor who recognizes voice protection as the primary objective, not standardization. The work aligns precisely with extensive copy editing and fiction editing experience across multiple genres. The manuscript's Australian English, recurring motifs, and rhythm-based prose structure require careful sentence-level refinement without sacrificing the author's distinctive narrative voice. Track Changes implementation with editorial comments and style sheet development are standard deliverables. A sample edit section (approximately 5,000-7,500 words) can be completed first to establish alignment on editorial approach and voice preservation. This allows the author to assess whether the editing maintains the manuscript's intentional stylistic features while addressing clarity, flow, repetition, consistency, and punctuation refinements. The full manuscript edit timeline and project scope can be confirmed following the sample review. This approach ensures the editing enhances rather than diminishes a carefully constructed narrative voice.
