2. Serverless Payment Webhook Processing System Category: Cloud Computing / Backend Development Budget: £1,200 GBP — Fixed Price, 3 Milestones Project deadline: Thursday, 8 October 2026 Description: Looking for a backend/cloud engineer to build a serverless system that receives, verifies, and processes payment provider webhooks (e.g. charge succeeded, refund issued, subscription cancelled) and updates internal records accordingly. The system needs to handle signature verification, retries on failure, and idempotent processing so duplicate webhook deliveries don't cause double-processing. No physical or client-facing deliverables — purely backend/event-processing infrastructure. Key requirements: • Experience building serverless functions (AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, or GCP Cloud Functions) • Understanding of webhook signature verification and idempotency patterns • Comfortable working with event-driven, asynchronous processing pipelines • Available for a short, focused delivery window Deliverables: • Working webhook receiver and processing pipeline • Signature verification and idempotency handling • Short handover document covering retry logic and failure monitoring Payment Structure — £1,200 GBP Fixed, 3 Milestones Milestone 1 – Advance Payment: £480 • Paid upon project commencement and award of contract • Funds initial development and setup of the agreed scope • This payment does not constitute delivery, acceptance, or completion of any part of the work, and does not waive any requirement of this posting Milestone 2 – Advance Payment: £480 • Paid upon the Freelancer demonstrating development progress against the agreed scope, at the Client's sole discretion • Same conditions as Milestone 1 apply: this payment does not constitute delivery, acceptance, or completion, and does not limit the Client's rights in the event of non-delivery or breach Milestone 3 – Final Payment: £240 • Payable only upon full delivery of all items listed under Deliverables above, functioning as specified, together with transfer of all source code, documentation, and access relevant to the work • Failure to meet these conditions voids entitlement to the Final Payment Money-Back Guarantee & Acceptance Terms: 1. Freelancer's acceptance of these terms. By commencing any work under this project — including, without limitation, accepting the award, confirming a start date, or performing any preparatory or substantive task — the Freelancer is deemed to have read, understood, and irrevocably accepted all terms of this posting in full, including this Money-Back Guarantee & Acceptance Terms clause. Commencement of work by the Freelancer constitutes their binding acceptance of the contract; it is not conditional on any further signature or confirmation. 2. Milestone release ≠ Client's acceptance of the work. Release of any milestone payment by the Client authorises the Freelancer to commence or continue work only. It does not constitute the Client's acceptance of that work or of the final deliverable. The Client's acceptance of the deliverable occurs solely upon the Client's written confirmation that it conforms to the specification set out in this posting. 3. Time is of the essence. The Project Deadline stated above (8 October 2026) is a material term of this engagement. 4. Money-back guarantee. If the completed deliverable(s) are not delivered in full working order by the Project Deadline, and the Client has not granted an express written extension prior to that deadline, this contract shall automatically and immediately terminate (become void) without further notice, and the Freelancer shall refund the Client all sums paid under this contract in full within 5 business days of the deadline lapsing. 5. Extensions. Any extension to the Project Deadline is valid only if agreed in writing by the Client before the original deadline expires. No extension is implied by silence, delay in response, or continued work after the deadline has passed. 6. No waiver. The Client's acceptance of late or partial work, at its sole discretion, does not waive the Client's rights under this clause in respect of any other milestone or deliverable. 7. Survival. This clause survives termination of the contract. 8. Strict no partial acceptance. There is no partial acceptance of work and no payment beyond the Milestones expressly set out above for incomplete or partially functional deliverables. "Substantial completion" or "near completion" does not qualify. Completion of individual components does not entitle the Freelancer to proportional payment. Testing, feedback, or engagement from the Client does not itself constitute acceptance. Acceptance occurs only upon full completion of the Deliverables as set out in this posting. 9. Refund rights (material breach). Failure to deliver a complete, working system as specified in this posting constitutes material breach. This includes missed delivery obligations, a non-functional deliverable, or failure to meet the specification set out above. The Client reserves the right to terminate this contract and pursue recovery of payments made, subject to applicable law. 10. Suspension rights. The Freelancer may suspend work if payment of a due Milestone is overdue by more than 30 days, the Client commits a material breach of this agreement, or the Freelancer reasonably believes continuing would expose their work product to unauthorised use or a security risk. 11. Limitation of liability. Liability under this contract is limited to the total fixed price of £1,200. Nothing in this clause excludes liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded. 12. Confidentiality. Both parties agree to keep confidential any system architecture, code, credentials, and data shared in connection with this project. This obligation survives termination of the contract. 13. Intellectual property. Upon receipt of the Final Payment (Milestone 3), all deliverables — including source code and documentation produced specifically for this project — become the property of the Client. The Freelancer retains ownership of any pre-existing tools, frameworks, or generic components used to deliver the work. 14. Force majeure. Neither party is liable for delays caused by events beyond their reasonable control, including natural disasters, war, infrastructure failures, or pandemics. 15. Communication requirement. All communication, updates, approvals, and documentation relating to this project must occur in writing. Communication outside of this does not amend this agreement. 16. Governing law. This agreement is governed by the laws of England and Wales, and any disputes fall under the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

I can build a reliable serverless payment webhook processing system on Amazon Web Services, with a clear event-driven flow from secure receipt through asynchronous processing and internal record updates. The implementation will validate provider signatures before accepting events, use idempotency keys and durable state to prevent duplicate processing, and handle retries safely without creating inconsistent payment, refund, or subscription records. I will structure the API Development around maintainable endpoints and processing components, with practical failure monitoring and concise handover documentation covering retry behavior, recovery, and operational checks. Continuous Integration will be included to run automated validation for signature handling, duplicate deliveries, retry scenarios, and representative payment events before deployment. I will keep the Programming focused on a short, testable delivery window and provide the source, configuration guidance, and documentation needed for handover. Which payment provider(s) and internal datastore should the webhook pipeline support, and what idempotency key or event-ordering guarantees do they provide? I will also clarify event ordering and downstream record-update expectations early so edge cases are addressed rather than assumed. Regards, Muhammad Awais

There's a choice to settle before any code gets written: dedupe purely at the gate, a conditional write on the event id that blocks a second delivery from ever reaching your handler, or push idempotency into the handler itself so every state change is a safe upsert no matter how many times it fires. The gate is cheaper and stops duplicates immediately, but only works if every side effect can tolerate being skipped rather than retried. For payment webhooks I'd run both, the gate as primary defence since you want a hard stop before anything downstream runs, and idempotent writes underneath so a failure between the two doesn't leave things stuck. Signature verification sits ahead of the gate as middleware, checked against the provider's secret before the event id is read, so a forged payload never touches the dedupe store. Retries lean on the platform's own retry and backoff rather than a hand rolled queue, simpler to run and cheaper to operate. M1: signature verification middleware and receiver skeleton, GBP 300, 2 days. M2: conditional write dedupe store keyed on event id, GBP 350, 2 days. M3: handlers for charge succeeded, refund issued and subscription cancelled, idempotent throughout, GBP 350, 2 days. M4: retry and monitoring setup plus the handover doc, GBP 200, 1 day. Which provider is this for, and does the record update need to trigger anything downstream or stop at the database? Do you have a secrets store for the signing key already, or is that part of the scope?

Hi, I'm Denis, a full-stack developer with solid experience building event-driven systems on AWS Lambda and serverless platforms. I've worked on several payment processing pipelines requiring reliable webhook handling, signature verification, and idempotent processing to prevent duplicate charges. You need a robust backend that receives webhooks from payment providers, verifies legitimacy, processes them exactly once even if they arrive multiple times, and updates records reliably. Signature verification ensures security, while idempotency prevents charging customers twice. My approach: 1. Review your payment provider's webhook format and signature scheme 2. Set up Lambda to receive and verify signatures 3. Implement idempotency using a database record of processed webhook IDs 4. Build atomic processing logic to update records 5. Add retry logic with exponential backoff for transient failures 6. Set up monitoring and documentation The critical technical consideration is idempotency. I'll store each webhook ID before processing and check if we've seen it before, preventing double-processing reliably using a simple database table. One realistic risk: unclear requirements around which payment events to handle and how they map to your internal records. I'll clarify this upfront to build the right solution first time. I can start immediately. Let's discuss the details. Thanks, Denis.

I've built serverless webhook processors for Stripe, PayPal, and Shopify using AWS Lambda and SQS, so this is right in my wheelhouse. I'll deploy the Lambda function with API Gateway, validate signatures using the payment provider's SDK, and ensure idempotency with DynamoDB for tracking processed events. Retries will use SQS DLQs with exponential backoff, and I'll document the failure recovery process in the handoff. I can start immediately. Thanks, Andrii.

You need a serverless payment webhook pipeline that securely verifies events, prevents duplicate processing, and reliably handles retries and failures. I have direct experience with AWS Lambda, serverless Python, payment processing, webhook handling, and event driven pipelines. At Marin Software, I built production systems using Python, AWS Lambda, and real time event processing. At Poundit, I worked with Stripe payment flows and webhook handling, including automated payment processing. I can combine these experiences to build a clean webhook receiver with signature verification, idempotency controls, asynchronous processing, retry handling, and failure monitoring. I will also document the processing flow and recovery behavior so the system is easy to maintain after handover. The main point I would confirm first is which payment provider and database are being used. Can you share those details?

I would keep the webhook receiver deliberately thin: verify the provider signature against the raw payload, validate the event, persist/check the event ID for idempotency, then place the work onto a durable queue and return quickly. On AWS I would use API Gateway + Lambda for ingestion, SQS for asynchronous processing, DynamoDB or the existing database for idempotency state, a DLQ for exhausted failures, and CloudWatch for structured logs and alarms. The processing layer would handle duplicate deliveries safely, distinguish retryable from permanent errors, and ensure events such as successful charges, refunds and cancellations cannot update internal records twice. I would also provide automated tests for signature failures, duplicate events, retries, queue failures and successful processing, plus concise handover documentation. I can start immediately once milestone acceptance and refund terms are tied to objective test criteria.

Hi there, Serverless webhook processing is exactly the kind of backend event pipeline I solve well. I’ll build a secure receiver with signature verification, then process events through Microservices-style async workers so retries, idempotency, and duplicate deliveries are handled cleanly. I’ll also add clear Documentation covering failure handling, retry logic, and monitoring so your team can run it confidently. Best regards, Ian

The real challenge here is not just receiving payment webhooks, but making sure duplicate deliveries, failed retries, and bad signatures never corrupt your internal records. I’d build this as a clean serverless pipeline with verified ingress, idempotency keys/store, and controlled retry + failure monitoring so the system stays safe under repeated or delayed events. I’ve worked on backend flows where payments and async events had to be processed reliably rather than just “accepted,” including webhook validation, queue-based handling, and audit-friendly processing logic. For this kind of brief, the important part is getting the event contract, retry behavior, and record-updating rules right from the start so delivery stays within your focused window. To keep the handover useful, I can include a concise runbook for retry/failure cases as well. - Which provider is the primary source of webhooks here: Stripe, GoCardless, Paddle, or another gateway? - Should updates land in an existing database/API, or do you also need the persistence layer designed as part of this build? - Do you already have a preferred cloud stack between AWS, Azure, and GCP?
