I have an Arduino-based board that is powered from its own DC rail, yet it has to monitor several other DC lines whose grounds are completely separate. Right now I’m simply feeding each line through a voltage divider, and—unsurprisingly—the readings jump around or drift because the grounds are floating. The symptom is clear: inaccurate voltage readings that make the data unusable. What I need is a clean, reliable way to sense those isolated DC voltages without tying the reference points together. Whether that means introducing isolated amplifiers, optocouplers, tiny transformers, or another proven technique is up to you; I’m open to whichever approach gives stable, repeatable results and keeps the measurement side safe for the microcontroller. Here’s what I’d like back: • An updated schematic that drops into my existing design, showing every connection required for proper isolation • A concise parts list with recommended component values and footprints I can actually buy today • A short rationale explaining how the proposed stage cures the isolation problem and what accuracy I can expect KiCad, Eagle, or even a clearly annotated PDF is fine for the schematic, as long as I can replicate it. If you can include quick SPICE or other simulation plots to illustrate behavior, that’s a bonus but not strictly required. Once I have a working revision that delivers stable, accurate readings on my bench, I’ll consider the job complete.

With over a decade of experience in the field of electrical engineering and circuit design, I am confident that my expertise is a perfect match for your isolated voltage measurement project. My skills extend to powerful software such as KiCad, Eagle, and MATLAB, and I'm well-versed in various programming languages required to create functional schematic designs Plug and play. I have tackled similar problems before, especially in PCB design and embedded system projects, where analog electronics proved crucial. In one such instance, I successfully implemented an isolated motor drive which ensured stable readings without compromising data quality. This experience has honed my ability to identify the most appropriate components (optocouplers, transformers etc.) for a given task. I assure you that if given this opportunity, I will deliver an updated schematic that respects your original design and addresses the isolation issue effectively. Additionally, I will explain the rationale behind every decision made, providing you with an accurate estimated output. Rest assured, your project will be complete only when you are satisfied with the stability and accuracy of the revised design on your bench.

This is an interesting project. There are two primary approaches to achieve it. The first method uses two 2-channel ADCs for voltage and current sensing via Hall sensors in a galvanically isolated domain, requiring four similar channels in total. The second approach uses analog isolators, though this is less reliable for accurate power factor (PF) measurement. If PF measurement is required, I recommend using a microcontroller with a hardware FPU. This will handle the computational load and facilitate faster data collection. My bid includes schematic and PCB design in KiCad. The board requires careful routing for optimal SNR. The first approach is less cost-effective, as it demands significant signal conditioning and robust power supply rejection (PSR) planning. I would love to hear more about your intended budget and the specific application. This context will help me provide a more tailored solution.

Hi. I have analyzed your current schematic involving the MCP3903 and the 4-channel voltage divider/Zener protection stage. To ensure the design is both robust and cost-effective, I suggest a brief breadboard validation of the front-end topology (testing with channel only). Depending on your specific signal requirements, I propose three optimized paths: 1. High-Precision Isolation (AMC1200)If your application involves high-voltage sensing where safety is paramount, the AMC1200 is the gold standard, but it requires an isolated DC-DC converter (e.g., B0505) for the high-side supply. 2. Simplified Current Sensing (ACS712)If the primary goal is current measurement, we can replace the shunt/B0505 combination with a Hall-Effect sensor like the ACS712. 3. Cost-Effective Differential Stage: For signals that do not require full galvanic isolation but have common-mode noise, a high-CMRR differential op-amp stage is the most efficient choice. This maintains the 24-bit precision of the MCP3903 while keeping the layout compact. To finalize the hardware architecture, could you please clarify: -The expected voltage/current range of the analog source? -Is galvanic isolation a strict safety requirement for this project? I can provide updated schematics and Proteus/LTspice simulations for these options once the parameters are confirmed. Looking forward to your feedback Regards Osama Elkomy

hi, This is interesting.. Are you measuring AC or DC? What we can do is to use one low cost micro controller per channel, like 8 pin PIC or ATTiny85 , it sends data digitally over an opto coupler to the main controller. it reads the values. You will need isolated power supply for each channel, so that its GND and the isolated power ground and the auxiliary micro controller ground can be common. I can give you circuit diagram and code for each micro controller. If you want the front end to be only analog type we can use VCO or some other analog circuits. What is the range of the input voltage and the accuracy you expect. you may need to calibrate each channel once at the beginning.

Hi, it takes long because I do built the prototypes, so if you give me the specs (IE input voltage and required response time) I can make a test bench, you don't need to pay before the test is complete. I've already used, and I have spares, of an insulated DC-DC amplifier (-250 to 250 mV with a gain of 10) in that should fit but -again- I need your specs since from schematics is not very clear since there are no values for d1,d2,d3. Texas Instrument's AMC series should fit your requirements, but is necessary to get the exact specs. I can provide schematics in KICAD or EAGLE, your choice. If you like we can have a chat so I can get the exact needs. Cheers, Alex.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Your problem is exactly what happens when an ADC tries to read voltages that live on floating, unrelated grounds. A resistor divider alone won’t fix that, because the Arduino still has no valid reference for those rails. The right solution is to treat each measured line as an isolated signal path and convert it into something the MCU can read safely and repeatably. In practice, I’d likely use one of these approaches depending on voltage range and accuracy target: • Isolated amplifier / isolated ADC per channel for best analog accuracy • Voltage-to-frequency or isolated sigma-delta approach for clean digital transfer • Optocouplers only if precision requirements are modest What I’ll deliver: Updated schematic showing a proper isolated sensing stage for each DC line Buyable BOM with current parts and practical footprints Short technical note explaining why it works, expected accuracy, and any limits Optional SPICE/simulation plots if useful I’ll also make sure the design fits your existing board style and power constraints rather than suggesting something overcomplicated. Quick questions: • What voltages are you measuring on each isolated line? • How many channels? • What accuracy do you need (ex. ±1%, ±0.1%)? • Are the lines DC only, or noisy/switched? This is a solvable problem, and the fix is mostly about choosing the right isolation architecture.

I’ve worked on several projects involving measurement of electrical signals where the reference grounds are completely isolated from the controller. Situations like this typically require a carefully designed interface stage to ensure stable readings while maintaining proper electrical isolation and protecting the microcontroller. I can help you redesign the sensing stage so the Arduino can reliably measure those DC rails without tying the grounds together. The deliverables will include a clean schematic that can be integrated into your existing board, a practical bill of materials with components that are readily available, and a short technical explanation of how the solution works and what level of accuracy you can expect. If useful, I can also include simulation plots to illustrate the behavior. My focus will be on producing a robust and repeatable measurement solution that works reliably on the bench and is straightforward to replicate in your design tools (KiCad, Eagle, or annotated PDF). If you can share a bit more detail about the voltage ranges, number of channels, and any size or cost constraints, I’ll tailor the design accordingly. Looking forward to discussing the project. Best regards

before doing anything else you need to mention expected DC voltage level at each DC rail and expected maximum current ratings. floating ground shift reference point and it will reason to couple noise in input signals. to avoid this, you need use shared ground or isolated amplifiers in pre-amplification stage. also, if make this on bread board it also reason to add noise in input signal trace. you need to isolate digital signal and analog inputs. one more thing is used non split ground plain in PCB if you decide to make this on PCB. I can provide you to complete schematic with BOM and amplifications stage simulations using PSPICE, also can be provide how to effect thermal noise in your system. I can show you my previous similar PCB example if you send me message
