The main aim of this project plan is to remotely track a mobile device in a Wi-Fi network. To achieve this; when a mobile device is connected to one of many Wi-Fi access points in the network, the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) will be then used to interrogate the Management Information Blocks MiB’s of each Wi-Fi access point until a list of mobile devices in the network has been discovered. Having singled out a mobile node of interest a triangulation algorithm will then be used in conjunction with signal strength readings to determine the mobile nodes movement through the network. Initial work will consider the use of a MiB browser to try and understand how the SNMP works, then a software application in C# will be written to provide remote tracking and the mobile nodes positional information via triangulation and signal strength.
