The general idea of this research (i.e. non-commercial) application is to provide the user with a means to input a scalar response (to the same repeat question) at set intervals over a period of time. The user responds to the prompt by entering a score using the scale displayed (1 to 5, 1 to 7 for example). As the user enters the score for that interval it is recorded, maybe in a text file, so that at the end of the period we can see the responses over time, export the file and plot a graph on a laptop. It would be nice (but not essential) if it also logged how long it took the user to respond (in seconds). Between intervals the data entry would be disabled and the screen would not display the numbers.
As a use case, we tell the user what question we are asking and every 2 minutes for the next hour while the user is sat at their desk the phone beeps and they enter 1-5. Afterwards we take the data (via WiFi?) and plot a chart.
We would put all phones into flight mode for an initial fail-safe. Some would also run on iPod Touch so no call problems there. After that it could be a problem if the user hit the home button but provided we could restart/resume quickly we'd be OK. If hitting the home button stops the app, then this would probably add an additional requirement that the file with results be time-stamped or named something unique (even a field ID increment would be fine e.g. log, log) just so we can paste the 1st results into the second results. If hitting the home button merely puts the app into background then we can call it forward again and continue as normal. Again, whichever is possible.
The following could be configurable at the start via a config menu:
1) Scale - 1 to 5, 1 to 7, 1 to 9
2) Overall time period (in minutes) that we want the app to run (e.g 1 hour, 2 hours, or until we hit 'stop')
3) Length of time intervals (e.g. prompt for response every 2 minutes, or every 5 minutes)
4) Length of time user has to respond before time expires (e.g. user must respond within 10 seconds or else they miss the chance)
5) Prompt highlight (e.g. whether there is some kind of beep or flashing screen)
6) If definitions for the numbers are given alongside the numbers or not (e.g. display "1" or display "1 - Very Low")
The display need not be too fancy, as I say it is not commercial and just for research. Ours is not a very commercial industry and there are no similar apps in use (for a start most places don't allow mobile phones) so this could be one big waste of time which is why we don't want to invest too much time or money! If it works there is a chance that we would want to further develop or modify in house in future so we would also require all source code etc.
The App will be given away free (via App Store if necessary) with an initial user group of around 5-10 and a maximum of 100
