Have you ever played with liquid mercury? Now, we know that it's unhealthy to touch it. But when I was a kid, if a thermometer broke, we'd all gather around it and play with its heavy liquid mirroryness. We'd flick it and push it and break it into little droplets and then push them together to merge them into bigger droplets. And all the time, it reflected like a liquid mirror. Every single drop.

So we'd like to make an iphone app to mimic this pleasure, since we don't dare touch the real stuff anymore. It would start with a big blob of mercury on the screen. Then the user could interact with it in various ways. Pushing it around and dividing/moving the blobs with a fingertip. Shaking the phone to disperse the blob into many tiny droplets. Pushing the droplets around with a fingertip. Touching the surface to make it ripple. Tilting the phone to make the liquid run across the screen surface, or tipping it on an angle to collect all the mercury into a single blob in the corner. The whole time, each drop and blob reflects what is virtually above it, and the image it reflects is user-settable. Also the background surface is user-controllable, including various textures.
This is the basic idea. But later on, there could be games built upon it, for example a labyrinth that the user has to navigate the blob through.
The crucial point is that the mercury looks and acts like real mercury, lots of reflectivity, a very heavy liquid with high surface tension. I'm sure the physical formulae describing its behavior are very clear, but I don't know them.
