I need a custom software solution that runs fully automated calibration routines for six key laboratory instruments: spectrum analyzers, power sensors, power loads, signal generators, vector network analyzers and directional couplers. The focus is on hands-off execution—once the equipment is connected the application should drive the instruments, step through each procedure, capture and store the data, and finish with a clear pass/fail decision. I work in a laboratory environment where most devices speak SCPI over VISA (GPIB, LAN or USB). The software should therefore detect connected instruments, load the right routine, and execute it without operator intervention. We have a template that we work from that the engineer will be required to understand and master using instrument drivers. The software we program with is in Keysight VEE which is very close in functionality and appearance to LabView. Deliverables • Executable application for Windows with an intuitive GUI • Instrument driver layer covering the six devices listed above, VISA-compliant • Editable routine framework so I can add or tweak procedures myself • Complete, well-commented source code and a concise user guide Acceptance criteria • Each instrument can be calibrated end-to-end with no manual steps • Measured data are logged accurately and saved in the chosen formats • The routine can be re-run and produce consistent results within specification limits If you have previous experience automating laboratory calibrations or building similar SCPI-based control systems, this should be a straightforward project. The candidate we select from must be prepared for a LONG term working relationship during EST, CST, MST and PST time zones. Special consideration will be given to candidates who are extremely well versed in microwave with power sensors and developing a calibration procedure for these per the manufacturers specifications. Candidates with a masters degree or higher would be more comfortable with this position as it is high detail and quality required. Knowledge of Test Uncertainty Ratios is also a bonus.

I’ll build you a hands-off calibration system that eliminates manual steps and delivers a defensible pass/fail verdict. The core architecture will be a VISA-compliant instrument layer with a generic SCPI parser, so detection and communication are handled automatically for all six device types. I’ll wrap that in an editable routine framework in Keysight VEE, where procedures are data-driven rather than hard-coded, allowing you to tweak measurement points, limits, and settling times without touching source code. For power sensor and microwave calibration specifically, I’ll implement routines that follow manufacturer specifications, including proper zeroing, calibration factors, and uncertainty analysis, with Test Uncertainty Ratios computed and displayed so your results are traceable and defensible. The GUI will show live instrument status, progress through each step, and a final summary report, but the system is designed to run fully unattended once the equipment is connected. I’m prepared for the long-term relationship and will work across your required time zones to ensure the system is maintained, extended, and documented to your standard.

The core challenge is building a calibration framework that is repeatable, instrument-aware, and precise enough to trust in a real lab—not just sending SCPI commands from a GUI. I have 9+ years of software engineering experience building automation, hardware-facing integrations, data logging, and test-oriented workflows, and I’m comfortable working with structured procedures, instrument drivers, and reproducible execution. I would design the Windows application around a VISA/SCPI abstraction layer, automatic instrument discovery, editable calibration routines, measurement capture, tolerance evaluation, and clear pass/fail reporting. Each device family would have its own driver module while sharing a common execution engine, so procedures can be modified without rewriting the whole application. I’d also preserve raw measurements and metadata so results can be audited and rerun consistently. Which exact instrument models and manufacturers are in your current six-device setup, and do you already have the Keysight VEE calibration template available for review?

For this calibration system, I’d build the instrument layer around VISA/SCPI so the six device types share one reliable communication framework while each calibration routine remains independently editable. The application would detect connected GPIB/LAN/USB instruments, identify the required driver, load the correct Keysight VEE-style routine, execute each measurement step automatically, validate results against the specified limits and generate a clear pass/fail record. Measurement data, instrument state and errors would be logged throughout so a failed run can be diagnosed rather than simply returning a failure. I’d keep the routine framework configurable so new procedures or instrument models can be added without rewriting the core application, then deliver the Windows executable, commented source and concise operating guide.

Hi, The difficult part is not just controlling six SCPI/VISA instruments it’s making them produce the same repeatable, hands-off calibration result every time, especially for the microwave power-sensor routines. I’d build the Windows application around VISA drivers for GPIB, LAN, and USB, with automatic instrument detection, routine selection, measurement capture, logging, and pass/fail evaluation. I’d keep the calibration procedures editable so specification changes or new routines don’t require rebuilding the application, while following your existing Keysight VEE template and manufacturer procedures. Could you share the VEE template and one representative power-sensor routine, including the required instruments and measurement sequence? Looking forward to hearing from you. Best Regards, Chand

Hi, I can support the development and long-term maintenance of your automated calibration environment, working within the existing Keysight VEE architecture rather than attempting to replace an established laboratory workflow. I’m comfortable with SCPI/VISA-based instrument automation over GPIB, LAN and USB, including instrument discovery, command sequencing, measurement acquisition, limit evaluation, repeatable pass/fail logic, data logging and reusable calibration routines. I can work from your existing VEE template and manufacturer procedures to develop and validate routines for spectrum analyzers, signal generators, VNAs, power sensors/loads and directional-coupler workflows. I understand that repeatability, traceability and measurement uncertainty are more important here than simply getting an instrument to respond to commands. I’m also available for a long-term engagement during U.S. working hours.

Most instruments in that list speak SCPI over VISA, which makes the control layer tractable: a driver per instrument behind one common interface, so a routine reads the same whichever box it drives. The part that matters for calibration specifically is the record. Every run stores the instrument, serial number, firmware, the reference used, ambient conditions if you capture them, raw readings and the pass or fail against your tolerances. Certificates print from that record, so the paperwork always matches what actually happened. Two honest limits. I write the software; I am not a metrologist, so the procedures and tolerances have to come from you or your standard. And I cannot test against instruments I do not have, so I will need either remote access to a bench or a simulator plus your sign-off on real-hardware acceptance. Tell me the six models and their interfaces, GPIB, USB or LAN, and I will tell you which are quick and which will fight us.

Hello, The biggest risk is instrument heterogeneity and timing: differences in command sets, trigger behavior, and measurement latency across spectrum analyzers, power sensors, power loads, signal generators, vector network analyzers, and directional couplers will cause nondeterministic runs unless the driver layer enforces strict VISA-compliant session handling, standardized trigger and timeout policies, and a deterministic routine executor that serializes hardware access when needed. I have delivered multiple measurement and calibration projects where I built instrument driver layers, automated hands-off procedures, and produced Windows executables with editable routine frameworks. Relevant work includes a payroll API integration and a mission-critical tax filing system where I authored testable driver-like modules and full end-to-end automation, and several lab automation tasks using VISA and instrument control concepts. My background as a Senior Software Engineer and CTO-level contributor means I write maintainable source code, clear user guides, and I manage long-term support across EST, CST, MST, and PST schedules. I will start by creating a VISA-compliant driver abstraction for all six device classes, implement a routine framework that loads editable procedures, and add a deterministic executor with pass/fail logic and configurable logging formats. The first deliverable will be a working prototype that detects connected instruments and runs one complete calibration hands-off. - Do you have preferred manufacturers and models for each of the six instrument classes so I can target driver implementations up front? - Which logging formats and data fields are mandatory for acceptance: CSV, XML, binary, timestamps, uncertainty fields, or other? A quick call works for me whenever you are ready. Thomas Beigbeder

Hello, Primary risk is achieving truly hands-off end-to-end calibration when instruments vary in firmware, SCPI dialects, or transient USB/VISA connectivity. I will mitigate this by implementing a resilient VISA-compliant driver layer with automatic device discovery, timeout/backoff, and stateful retries so routines never stall waiting for intermittent responses. I have implemented automated test and calibration systems for RF and microwave labs using instrument control frameworks comparable to Keysight VEE and LabView. That work included automated sweeps for spectrum analyzers and vector network analyzers, scripted control of signal generators and power sensors, and calibrated power load characterization. I have designed editable routine frameworks and GUIs that log data in CSV and XML, and produced user guides and full source repositories for handoff. I have direct experience with microwave power sensor calibration workflows and with documenting Test Uncertainty Ratios for lab procedures. I will start by reverse-engineering the set of instrument SCPI/driver peculiarities you have and building a modular, VISA-compliant instrument layer in Keysight VEE. The GUI will be an executable Windows app that loads editable routines and runs them fully unattended while producing pass/fail decisions and consistent recorded outputs. - Which specific models and firmware revisions of the six instruments will be in the initial scope? - Do you have preferred output formats for data logging and archival retention requirements? A quick call works for me whenever you are ready. Christopher
