Aims
The aim is to research into Punjabi news media sources and establish the story that has been told about the Covid-19 pandemic in India and in Punjab.
The time period to cover is from January 2020 to December 2020.
Tasks
• Identify the main online news sources in Punjabi language.
• For each month of the year, select three or four articles or news broadcasts that talk about Covid-19.
• For each article, write a brief summary (2-4 sentences) explaining in English what the article is saying.
• Please provide the information in the following format:
1. Date of article
2. Link to news article
3. Brief English summary of the article
Purpose
The main purpose of this research is to capture the main story that has been presented to the general public by official media sources, and to see if and when the story has changed. For example, we want to answer the questions below, but the answers need to be backed up by some official news report:
According to official news media, what is Covid-19?
Where has it come from?
Did information about the source of Covid-19 change over time?
How and when did Covid-19 enter India and the Punjab?
Did the information about how Covid-19 came to India and the Punjab change? (For example, earlier reports stated that it came through Italian tourists, then reports said it was brought to India and spread by members of Tablighi Jamaat – when was this news published).
Was anyone blamed for Covid-19? Who?
Did information about this change over time?
What are the causes and treatments?
Did information about the causes and treatments change over time?
What advice was given to the general public about how to avoid catching Covid-19?
Did information about this change over time?
When did lockdown begin and what were the instructions provided to the general public?
What changes were there in the advice given to the general public?
What happened after this? How did the situation change or develop?
