3 Objects, 3 Levels of Contrast Objectives Developing an understanding of perspective techniques and enhancing the illusion of depth using value contrast and line quality. This will be a 3-week studio assignment so please budget that time to allow for the complete development of the value system. Method Arrange 3 different objects together on a flat surface with a single light source. Choose 3 objects that are relatively similar in size Establish your point of view and arrange the 3 objects so that the first item is positioned very close to you, the second is positioned behind the first, and the third object is positioned in the back. The position of these three objects should achieve a foreground, middle ground and background Adjust each object so that they overlap each other from your point of view. Make sure that each object is only partially obscuring the object behind it, not completely hidden Draw the 3 objects from observation including form and shadow shapes. Fill in all your shadows to one level of gray before adding additional layers Develop the range of values so that the object that is in the front has the highest contrast, the object in the middle has medium contrast, and the object in the back has the lowest contrast. Objects with high contrast will advance forward and objects with less contrast will recede backward Develop your line quality to further enhance the contrast of the closer objects. Make sure your line quality is thick or thin, light or dark to enhance the illusion of depth Don’t add dark lines to objects that need lower contrast Specifications 1 drawing of 3 objects, depicted using a full range of values and enhanced depth (foreground, middle, background) using value contrast and line quality Vine charcoal & charcoal pencil Paper size 18 x 24 inches Vertical or horizontal orientation as appropriate for the still life
