Write some Software for Unity 3D that provides path selection

I have a fitness game in development that has hit a snag. It’s a first person hiking game that allows exercisers to walk around a tropical Island. You can see an example here [url removed, login to view] . There are no animated characters. It’s an exercise game and the hiker doesn’t have to steer down the path. To move down the path, they “walk” on two points on a game mat that correspond to the “G” and “H” keys on my keyboard. For programming purposes, “walking” with your fingers on the “G” and ”H” keys moves you down the path. Stopping with both fingers on both keys or leaving the keyboard completely, pauses the walker where they are. The walker is constrained to the path and there is no steering mechanism. I also have the capability to reverse direction by hitting the “+” key, a different spot on the mat. My program counts the steps and calculates calories and distance. Please incorporate a step counter into your controller script design.
My problem is at path intersections. I have both 3way and 4way intersections on the Island. I cannot figure out a way for the walker to select in advance which direction they want to go. I would like it if the walker could switch to the F and G keys and continue around the corner to the left or , switch to the H and J keys and continue around the corner to the right. If they stay on the G and H, they continue through the intersection. Please comment the lines of your code so that a novice, like me, can understand it.
Please submit a playable scenario that is nothing more than a figure 8 path that I can walk down. I want to be able to turn left or right and if I don’t choose to turn, I continue walking straight through the intersection.
The winner will be the programmer that submits the best working scenario and the cleanest simplest working script.
