When the contest holder does not choose a winner, the prize money is distributed among top rated entries. If your work is good, and is rated highly, then you will get a share of the prize money, even if no winner is picked. I made money from a contest that I had completely forgotten about, but I was ranked highest, and I was the ONLY one with 3 stars, and everyone else had 1 or 2 stars..and I got the entire prize amount. It was like I won the contest even though I did not.
So basically, keep up the quality of your work and get rated highly as much as possible.. It might just pay off someday. That is the only thing in your control really.
