Contest Brief
NAME OF COMPANY:
Bombshelter
NEW INFO================
- Contest has been extended 3 more days
- Additional money has been added to the prize pool, and more may be added
- We are 100% going to go with a CIRCULAR design, because we want the option of being able to use the logo as the "O" in BOMBSHELTER
========================
Logo to represent Precaution, Safety and Survival in a potentially hazardous post-apocalyptic era. We sell bombshelters, and survival gear (convert dirty water to clean water, swiss army knives, GPS devices, ham radios), books and products on safety, war, politics, health, and how to protect and secure yourself and your family in the face of potentially global catastrophe due to Nuclear meltdown, war, radiation, civil war, unrest, etc.
The logo is for immediate use on our Website as well as social media such as Facebook, Twitter, and other majors.
A balance should be struck, between the negative hazardous dangerous panic side of the equation, versus the safety, protection, health, and survival side of things.
The logo should be very approachable. It should not make you wince, or feel bad or disgust. It should be very inviting, and pleasant, despite the subject matter. We believe that is a matter of how you "spin" the underlying ideas. Even an ecological hint could help (for instance, a leaf, or green color, or showing underground bombshelter cave with grass and tree above ground and dangerous sunrays, etc.).
Also, a totally different approach, is it could be very punk/MTV/renegade approach. That would be good for marketing T-shirts, and caps. The logo "effect" on marketing the company as a brand could go a long way in this manner, and if the logo is deemed so important and integral to the company brand, we are open to giving a percentage of income to the designer of such a powerful logo. We are fair and believe in giving credit where credit is due.
And finally, the logo ought to be ELEGANT but easily replicated/represented by just drawing it with a pencil and paper. The design can be advanced, but the guts of it, the gist of it, should be able to be represented easily.
We are completely open minded, and would like to see all ideas you have, no matter how radical. We will be commenting prolifically, so stay tuned for your feedback.
The name of the company "Bombshelter" does not need to be in the logo icon itself, but we're open to it being in there. Either way. Mostly, focus on Iconographic concepts, and rely less on the name "Bombshelter" to brand the design.

EVERYONE: An element that seems to be working well is this "remnant of a long lost civilization". The idea of distressing the logo, or giving it age.

Here's an idea we haven't seen done: What about as the circle in the middle in some designs creates a "inner ring", how would concentric growing "rings" from the center to the perimeter look?

FNOONFX did something interesting in that he used a "green" almost glowing radioactive quality. The green also doubles as a kind of ecological color, to say something about health and safety in an ironic twist. Green OR Yellow seems to be some of the most useful colors at this point.

BD121 did something interesting, by using the longitude and latitude lines in a globe to give a "global" element. The bomb and fuse however, are not working well.

I don't understand. You end up giving 5 stars to the radioactive-hazard symbol? Why don't you just googled it or requested to us "I need the hazard symbol in vector format? I did it on entry #7 and you gave me 3 stars. What's your criteria?

EVERYONE: We will be going with a CIRCULAR design. This is a new, and final decision. The reason is, we would like to have the option to use the logo as the "O" in the word BOMBSHELTER.

EVERYONE: The contest has been extended an additional 72 hours (3 days) and some more money has been added to the prize pool. We have some top contenders doing some good work, getting really close, but I think everyone can agree we needed some more time from here to really knock it out of the park. So the contest has been extended. We may also add more money to the prize pool, if the quality of the work starts to go higher up. We are fair, and reward proportionately to the quality and talent that is responding. Keep up the good work guys! Don't be afraid to submit many variations and brainstorming ideas.

BD121, we rated yours high, because it was a very clever use of the globe in a circle. But please try and do something without a bomb and fuse. We don't supply bombs or protect from literal bombs. Bombshelters traditionally were used to protect from nuclear fallout. Radiation, global catastrophe, epidemics, wars, civil war, civil unrest, and further survival and survival in the wild.

Hi there, I'd like to know why my entry #7 has 3 stars and entry #24 has 4 stars. What are the big differences? One is round and the other square? Also, you requested to add survival stuff on mine and you don't request to add survival stuff on his/her entry and still has 4 stars. What's the criteria? I'm confused. Thanks.

CH, you write a long Brief explaining how the logo should look, that it must tell people what it is about at first glance, that it has to clearly show that it represents post-apocalyptic survival and you give 4 stars to entry #12 ? Really? That logo tells me NOTHING about NOTHING. Look carefully a it. You may have the nuclear symbol in your head and so that logo tells something to you, but believe me that for someone that sees it for the first time it looks like nothing.

It has a ways to go still, and we'll be commenting about #12 . Let's see your high standards sir. Please. Although we guarantee to pay out to a winner, we may not use the winner for our company logo, because we have not yet seen anything good enough. #12 , #6 , and #8 all have decent conception, but need more refinement, and a better sense for the intrinsic meaning of the company, as you say. If you'd like to show us a protected sketch, to see if you have a concept that could go the distance, you are more than welcome, and with our feedback you can then flesh it out with the rest of your time.

Additionally, some hint at the idea of GLOBAL could work well. What about a crescent protective earth dome on top, with the bottom half a nuclear symbol in red/black? As if to say, "we are your global protection solution to a growing concern of catastrophe". Just an idea!

I just came across this. Very interesting use of the Radioactive insignia with a earth globe in the center. It's too "clip-arty" and not designed enough into a logo, but I think it's worth sharing, because it gets us thinking about how we can combine elements:

regarding #5 Tareq, Your goal oriented thinking is excellent, in that your end result is somewhere in the neighborhood of an iconographic style and the colors and design are fairly elegant. That said, it doesn't have enough character to carry the company as a defining design/logo. One should look at the Logo and be able to deduce what the company is related to without reading any text. There should be enough iconographically, to indicate the subject matter.

#6 - It's still far aways off from what could be acceptable, but we've rated this a 3-stars because it's starting to shape up nicely. It's getting stronger, tighter, clearer. Let your creativity loose, and keep steering it in this polished elegant direction, and something is going to be close. You're doing great.

For some inspiration, take a look at these Google Image results:

If that link doesn't work for you, basically, go to images.google.com and type without quotes: "survival OR bombshelter OR hazardous icon". Or try some variations on that (substitute LOGO for the word ICON, or SAFETY for the word HAZARDOUS, etc etc). See if that leads you into some inspiration!

Thank you Meico. You're on to something with the crash test dummy insignia, but it's still not quite conveying the Survival/Safety aspect. Don't sweat the business name on the logo, don't even worry too much about putting that into your submissions, unless it's literally a part of the logo (intertwined inside or something). Also, the use of three colors (green, yellow, black, and white), is a bit too "loud". If you could get it down to the basics, and use two more closely related colors and black and white, or just one color and black and white, or just two colors, that probably will work better. We're open to further brainstorming, if you want to just show raw conceptualizations. We'll give feedback. I think the Yellow and Green are too disparate of colors, in something that seems almost related (two rings). Try and dig a little deeper.

Regarding entry #1, it was a valiant effort, and we appreciate the fast hard work and customized text, but we're 100% needing a logo as well. Text is secondary, and as a matter of fact, not a requirement. We're looking for something visual and graphic.
