The goal is to design a gripper that is moving out and grabs a pole. This gripper will be used in a revolutionary robot. More contests will follow.

The gripper is mounted on the middle of a base. Picture "base_3D" shows this base. Picture "base_2D" shows the measurements of the base.

Pictures "gripper_1", "gripper_2" and "gripper_3" show how the gripper starts closed, than opens up when it is moving outward and finally closes around the pole. The grip of the gripper around the pole should be very tight.

It is really important that the gripper is closed at the beginning of the movement ("gripper_1").

The picture "gripper_rotation" shows that the gripper must be able to rotate around the center of the base to reach all four poles. While rotating it can never leave the green circle which is the edge of the base.

The main challenge of this contest is to only use two servos. One servo is used to rotate the gripper to all four starting positions. The second servo is used to move the gripper out and grab the pole.

Picture "servo_specifications" shows the size of the servos. The max. servo rotation is 270 degrees.

The goal is to desing parts that can be 3D printed. The base should also be modeled and it can be changed to fit the servo. In addition, pins with diameter of 3mm and length of 10mm can be used as axis of rotating parts. An animation should show the movement of the system.

It is a plus to not use additional parts like springs or rubber bands.
It is a plus to open the gripper only as much as needed to grab the pole.
It is a plus to use less space than shown with the green circle on picture "gripper_rotation.png".

    It would be nice to know the goal of this robot. You will get a lot of designs fulfilling your criteria, so what are the factors deciding which design is the best? For example the one with the least material? The one with the tightest grip? Simplest design? Sturdiest design?

      As for deciding factors. This is not a simple challenge as the gripper has to be closed before and after the movement and it has to be done with one servo.

      The relevance of your stated points is as follows:

      I added a new file to clarify. The servo is a feetech FT90 with 270 degree rotation. I did not find a drawing online.

    Does the gripper mechanism need to move with the pole in its grasp (now or in the future)? Or does it simply move from corner to corner and extend to grip the poles? How much effort must the gripper exert to grip the poles?

      Hi and thanks for your question. The gripper does not need to move with the pole, as it is attached to the base. The grip around the pole should be as strong as possible in the end position. Reaching out or rotating on the base does not need to be strong as it is only used for positioning.

      Hi, I just added another file with the name "servo_specifications_2". It shows the top view of the servo with the position of the mounting holes. The mounting holes of the servohorn are more flexible.
