I need to convert a large number of JPEG images from up to 640x480 to a size of 140px on the longest edge. Sample images are attached.

Here is a simple example showing how to do it in PHP:

I need to know how much faster a Java or C++ solution is compared to PHP. You can write your own version or find it on the internet.

Deliverable is a detailed benchmark report describing the hardware used, the timings achieved, and full source code ready to re-run locally. The best report wins the contest award.
